Why the Right Vendor Is the Key to Your CMMS Success


I’ve spent several months trying to get a new project off the ground. It’s been full of challenges at every turn. Every time I think I’m making progress, there’s another hiccup.

I was frustrated.

I needed to find a course of action that would get me the results I wanted. So, I did what every maintenance manager has done with big projects—I took a closer look to find the root cause of the problem.

I started by asking myself some questions…

  1. What am I trying to achieve?
  2. What are the ramifications if I can’t get there?
  3. What constraints am I working under?
  4. Are those constraints real or self-imposed?
  5. What can I do to remove those constraints?

I knew what I wanted to achieve. I knew the ramifications of not achieving it were significant.

But when I got to the third question, I realized I had a big constraint, and it was self-imposed.

I had the wrong vendor.

It was that simple.

Choose the Right Vendor

So, part of my problem was that I was the problem. When I chose my vendor, I thought it was a good match because we’d worked together on other projects.

But this project needed different skills. My vendor was great at other things, but this project wasn’t the right fit.

It’s a situation that applies to a lot of things, especially implementing maintenance software.

When you’re ready for new CMMS software, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is the vendor you partner with.

Choosing a software manufacturer is twofold—you obviously want one that offers the right product, but it’s also vital to find the one who can help you get the software up and running. Even if the software is great, if you don’t know how to use it effectively, it’s like not having CMMS software at all.

So, learn from my mistake. If your CMMS implementation isn’t going right, ask yourself if you have the right people—and the right vendor—working with you.
